freud-lacan: Re: Re'jouissances Hersh, Stephen
Indeed. One thinks of the idiomatic expression "marital rights" referring
to lovemaking.
Back to the search for a translation for jouissance (pardon the vulgarity of
the notion of "translation"), there is another idiom, "joy juice", which
refers to the body fluids produced during sexual relations, as well as
"spill a little joy juice" which means making love. These are raw
expressions, so again, please pardon the vulgarity. Also, to be clear,
these idioms are not widely known--they are a bit subculturish, like the
expression "everything's copasedek" for "everything's OK".
If Freud could refer to thoughts and feelings and ideas as if they were
physical quantities--with the term psychic energy--perhaps we can do
something with "joy juice" for jouissance. (I'm joking, I think. But to
follow the joke through, "joy juice" suggests both enjoyment and sexuality,
but without any of the legal overtones of rights and easements. )
Also, a further thought about using foreign words: If we use too many
foreign words such as Das Es and Der Unbewusste (forgive the probable
misspellings and grammatical errors), our prose becomes aufgehoben and
(but?) potentially emmerdé.

Last but not least, dear Stephen, it also means... possession (!) and also
tenure... One does not only enjoy the pleasures of life, but also, in
english:
one enjoy certain rights = jouir de certains droits / and sometimes a right
of
way = jouissance de passage!

Tout à fait de votre avis: moi aussi, tous ces mots étrangers m'agacent
