Budapest, the 27 July 1914 A

Dear Professor,

Although it is unlikely that this letter reaches you in the foreseeable future, given the present circumstances (1), I will still try to give you a sign of life.

The trip to England was canceled ; I do not have the right to leave the country, being assigned to the Territorial Army. I can still consider myself lucky if I'm not mobilized. I was assigned to Honved Hussars * ( !), as a physician assistant, so I'll have to make the countryside on horseback. Until August 1st I stay here anyway ; one, meantime, I'm not mobilized, I go in the Tatras where Mrs. G. staying with his family (provided that it is possible to travel) and, là-bas, I wait events. Maybe I'll join in Rank and I do a few trips with him in Tyrol.

I received notification today from Jung's departure Association. Therefore, "Finally, only 2 » !

It is not impossible that the war also affects our Congress. Foreigners will not want to come.

Should not we cancel the conference now ?

Warm greetings from

Ferenczi your

A. Place and date manuscripts, at the end. Mention the lack of the Year, it is given by the context.

  1. The 23 July, the Austrian government addressed an ultimatum to Serbia, with a delay of forty-eight hours. In its response 25 July, Serbia accepted most of the demands of the ultimatum, but Austria-Hungary responded the same day by the rupture of diplomatic relations and partial mobilization. The 28 July, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

Cher ami,

At the same time as the declaration of war that disrupts the peace of our station, happens to me a letter from you which finally brings me relief. So here we are finally rid of Jung, this holy gross, and his associates! I can not wait to thank you for the great diligence, efficiency and extraordinary activity, with which you have supported me and fought for a common cause. All my life, I was looking for friends who do not exploit me to betray me then, and now that I'm not so far from the end of the natural life, I hope to have found.

I can now fill the wish that you had made recently and give you the precise terms of my topic : Aspects of psychoanalytic technique. I beg you to insert somewhere, when the public is already heated.

It will not be difficult to ramble on about the reasons for the refusal of the Swiss when you look at the program of the International Psychoanalytical Association.

Sure, we can not predict at this time whether the events we will hold the congress. If the war in the Balkans remains localized, it will. But we can not say anything about Russia.

But it is perhaps the first time in thirty years that I feel to be Austrian and I'm willing to give it another chance Reich which there is not much hope. Morale is good everywhere. The liberating effect of the courageous, strong support for Germany are for many. - Can be observed in all symptomatic acts most authentic.

I hope you enjoy peace of mind on your well-deserved vacation.

Yours very truly

Freud.

Dear Doctor !

I find the more comical whether you just, among all Zurich, to which I wrote the history of the psychoanalytic movement, who refuse to give me pleasure1 ! How lucky that you have so little influence in Zurich. I can not wait to learn officially that we got rid of the "independent".

Of course, nothing stands in your way to another group. I also know that you will not be the only.

Congress, we discuss the future of the International Psychoanalytical Association, because this subject is enrolled in 2. I think the need will be obvious and the abandonment of an incident Jung will be unimportant.

Why did not you say anything about your health ? Or do I interpret this silence as optimum signum ? I am quite ready and would treat the entire chapter lightly.

I cordially greet you both and your offspring

Your Freud

From 4 August, à Seis, Tyrol, Pension Edel-weiss 3.

  1. Freud was expected that Binswanger and Pfister resign and join the group in Vienna, what happened actually ; cf. 102 B and remarks in a letter to Ferenczi's 17 July 1914 : "Received a letter the day before yesterday that assures me Pfister, against all odds, it is among us and is ready to enter the Viennese group, Zurich realize if the proposed demerger. This is the first new [after the publication of Freud (1914d)] and it is good " (ÔNBWien, 1053/21-9).

Dear Professor,

Here I am at the point where I perform moaning as my last working day. Sunday morning, on vacation. (My address : Brunshaupten i / Mecklenburg, Hôtel Dünenhaus.)

The two letters circulating. Putnam could provide more information; However, his statement is valuable, insofar as it shows that our organization has nothing to fear in America. Maeder letter is courteous in tone : there is no denying; the explanatory reference types or, more exactly, racial differences in intelligence do not win be repeated. This is a real mattress sybarite; car, in this position, it is unassailable. The manifesto Maeder told me I am not yet reached. Seif I was not given any response (last fortnight). So we would always reduced to indices which suggest that not participate in Zurich conference, if the circular invitation had already attracted a number of characteristic reactions.

The publication of a book on French psychoanalysis is a good sign. And reissue The Interpretation of Dreams is a sign still much better. Thank you very much for sending me a copy! I hope to play a part during the holidays. Also receive my compliments.

I visited Mme A. in hotel. She speaks to stay in Berlin. I was surprised to learn she read the “Predisposition to obsessional neurosis”(1).

I stay with Brunshaupten my wife and children to 3 August, Then I go to Bremen, where I will be back on 7 August, and then I send off with Eitingon final congress program. The 9 or 10, we go to the Tyrol.

After greatly disturbed cure your projects, I just add my very best wishes again to you and your wife. Begging you please also give me news of your sister at the first opportunity,

Votre Karl Abraham.

Dear Professor,

Immediately after sending the letter to which you responded so quickly, I had my own doubts about the correctness of my judgment about your emotional life, and I found several signs that spoke in favor of the fact that my judgment on this point could be disrupted by subjective factors. Your letter has only strengthen me in this direction. I admit that I might have overestimated the importance of Jung in your emotional life, as himself, and believe you me, I'm not very proud of this symptom identification unconscious Jung. Otherwise, I am sure of one thing : never my judgment will be influenced by the unconscious father-complex point me away from the land of psychoanalysis, even if not as a. That my complex can produce at most, this inhibition is at work ; they will never be able to achieve positive things (as to rebel or to buy his own gun [1]). That "I attack things differently from you" and you can not track my work projects effortlessly, I know that as long ; This is the second source which follows my inability to work ; one effet, my reason tells me that the proper way to tackle things that is exactly how you do it, you. Yet, I can not prevent my imagination to go his own way (circuitous route, perhaps ?). The result is : a wealth of ideas that are never enactments. If I had the courage to write simply my ideas and experiences - without worrying about your methods and direction of your work -, I'd be a prolific writer and, fina-ing, countless meeting points still appear in my results and yours. Up to now, at least, this was always the case ; I found your work in many of my own ideas (it is true, ordered more wisely). The best among you is the enemy of good home !

I hope you will put me in a position to control these things through psychoanalysis. Meantime, I will stand somehow.

I just flip through the book and Régis Hesnard (The Psycho-Analysis, librairie F. Alcan)(2) that, also, already takes into account the schism Jung. Aside from its objectivity (apparent), which manifests itself in an honest reproduction of the contents of your work, this book is no less insolent in its judgments that German critics ; is added to the ridiculous vanity of the French back all that is essential in your doctrine. - The true French psychoanalyst is not yet come.

The 30 July, I go in the Tatras, where I want to stay two or three days, and make small excursions. Then, en route to London, without stopping. I hope to give you, de là-bas, good news Annerl.

Cordial greetings to you and your wife, of

Dear Professor !

You had to learn that the group Zurich, by 15 voice against a, decided to leave the International Psychoanalytical Association1. I do not know if that one voice is mine or not because I was not present at the meeting in question, but I had telephonically conveyed to Maeder my intention to vote against a split. I can not accept the reasons or latent, nor obvious reasons that would justify such a division. I find it particularly

fun as the specter of freedom of research is also invoked by. I can not join the new independent organization to continue to collaborate, and I am quite willing to follow your advice to join the group Berlin or Vienna. I do not know what you think about the future of the International Association while Jung was so disappointed your hopes. These are just independent thinkers who recognize and admire your History of the Psychoanalytic Movement. Yours sincerely, I remain your

Cher Ami,

I will answer by return mail because you are about to remove your correspondence for some time. Your letter did not entirely satisfied. I think you overestimate the importance of Jung in my emotional life, as himself. I know nothing of a shift with my friends. I give you this : once more, I experienced it was too early to retire and work on getting rid of the other, and it is probable that I will not make a new attempt in this direction. This is probably a fatigue was expressed in these states of mind in the manner of King Lear and perhaps I had earned the right over the last twenty years. But there is absolutely no obligation to enforce all its rights. I renounce and therefore I will carry my cross patiently.

About our meeting this year, I have not sacrificed much- be, but to a new job 2 for which the company would be important to me tune. More, me it is not exactly easy to work with you. You attack things differently, and that is why you are often trying for me. So far I can say : Nulla dies sine linea * 3, and I hope that will continue well into the fall. A manuscript was sent to Rank, today 4.

Anna wrote to England that Jones has very kindly with her and the family receives, there came the first Sunday and has promised to return next Sunday. I do not want to do anything that disturbs this relationship. The little one has to learn to be assertive; but it will certainly be smart enough to avoid an explanation that can only lead to disappointment. Itself feels quite safe.

Cordially greet Gisela ** and write again before leaving for England.

With cordial greetings,

The two eldest, Goneril and Regan, exhaust themselves in protestations of love and bragging ; third, Cordelia, s’y refuse. The father should recognize and reward this silent love and deleted the third, but it ignores, it pushes Cordelia and divides the kingdom between the other two, for his own misfortune and that of all ". 22-07-1914 Freud to Jones

22 July 1914 Carlsbad

My dear Jones,

I think wise, from Putnam, you have chosen confessor, and your reply, given in a spirit truly analytical, Perhaps the best thing that you have to give. But let him do as he can, he never avoids his own hobbies. He simply said that there is an effort to sublimation at some of the best individuals, we do not contredirions, because it is indeed the case, but the simple fact spoil by mixing some philosophical theory, Hegel, Bergson or other. I am still glad to know honest and disinclined to do something ambiguous.

Summary of Jung is remarkable for its maneuvers to draw a line on the discharge, which, I think, will have its place in your paper1.

Thank you very much for your kindness to my little girl. Maybe you do not know enough. She is the most gifted and most accomplished of my children, and, what is more, she has a precious character. It only asks to learn, to see and understand the world. It does not purport to be treated as a woman, is still very far from any sexual desire and rather refusing man. It is understood between us that it should not consider marriage or the preliminaries before two or three years. I do not think she denounced the treaty (2).

You will learn, or if you know Abraham, Maeder has virtually declared that the output of the Zurich group ; he was ordered to wait until something is printed in Zurich, most likely a clear answer to my pathetic Beiträge zur Geschichte (3). Circular Abraham can accelerate the course of events (4).

I am delighted that Ferenczi spends his holidays (5) with you. I'm sorry to have « ousted (6) » (is there such a word?) this year, because I need isolation and concentration to the test Manual de Kraus (7). It's been a long time I have not had the opportunity to hear my own thoughts.

Our stay in Karlsbad is nice, although it is very hot, as every-Central Europe. I finished a technical contribution to the Magazine and plans another in the same spirit (8).

With all my affection

well you
