A seminar on the jouissance was held in Strasbourg from October 2004 and June 2006 under the direction of Jean-Marie Jadin and Marcel Ritter. This book reflects its aftermath. It is the result of work of rewriting most of the interventions actually pronounced.
The reader will find a chronological journey through the entire work of Lacan : Seminars, the Writings, Conferences, interviews and various interventions. This bias chronological identified more easily develop a concept that runs through the teaching of Lacan. Even if it takes shape and consistency at different crystallization, dispersion in the time of this concept makes it difficult at first. It was therefore necessary to squeeze closer to the various stages of its creation.
Although identifiable watermark in Freud's text, enjoyment is not really a Freudian concept. Freud rarely used the term " Enjoyment "And never in the sense that Lacan gave as radically distinct pleasure, « Lust ». In fact, Lacan borrowed the term from the text of Hegel enjoyment where the opposition between desire and pleasure is already evident. It also refers to the term 'substance' in Aristotle the notion of "substance jouissance" and that of "added value" for Marx the concept of "more-of-jouissance".
Enjoyment is first introduced by Lacan as "concept" opposite to the desire. Then from the seminar The ethics of psychoanalysis, it takes its place among the major concepts of psychoanalytic theory.
Therefore, the development of this concept will be based on a series of fundamental concepts whose main enjoyment for the body - "there is no body of enjoyment". The body is to be understood here as the body marked by language. Enjoyment is thus a concept border at the junction between the body and speech and language. It articulates with the main fundamental concepts of psychoanalysis such unconscious, repetition, the pulsion, desire, topic. It is also an essential reference for psychoanalytic practice because of its relationship with the symptom and interpretation. Finally, it appears as a central notion to think about the relationship between the sexes.
Three interventions were not subject to this job. Both were replaced by texts respectively Jadin Jean-Marie and Marcel Ritter.
