Projective plane and Lacanian subject — some examples
The projective plane is a non-orientable surface which is not representable (can be merged) in our usual three-dimensional space. After returning to a few definitions and properties of the projective plane, I will give some examples of the uses that Jacques Lacan of this topological object. These include representations involving the subject of the unconscious. However what is presented is not a formal mathematical work and includes trivialisations which can go against mathematicians. Jean-Michel Vappereau — Comments on the Sokal Affair — 1996
Richard Klein’s transcript of Jean-Michel Vappereau’s comments on the “Sokal affair” in 1996. The “Sokal affair” or “Sokal hoax” was an instance of intentional academic fraud conducted by Alan Sokal, a physics professor at New York University and University College London. Sokal submitted a paper laced with jargon that appealed to the ideological sensibilities of the editors of Social Text, a renowned journal in cultural studies. These are Vappereau’s comments on the situation, delivered sometime shortly after the Sokal publication.
