15-02-1914 Jones to Freud

15 February 1914

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

You should have received my long letter, with attachments, just after sending yours. You are exceedingly good to me if constantly, but I would not waste your time or overwhelm you so undue burdens, and I want you to feel as free as you please in this regard. Especially it is necessary during concentration on important work, and I'm glad to hear that you attach so much interest in the article Yearbook, to be his-toric and landmark, and enter at this point in detail1.

I'm sorry to hear that again found pus in the urine Loe, like the good old days. We always thought a pyelitis of the left side, but the last operation showed nothing visible to the naked eye in the renal pelvis (which has been thoroughly examined), and we hoped that it was therefore Benin, in any case it did not explain a small part of the pain. I wonder if it will jump from Paris to London ? Herbert will he consult the lawyer about the fiction of marriage2, or is this an absurdity swept? I'd like her wedding plans, etc., when they are finalized, which, j’imagine, is not yet the case.

I want to know the reason why you give me this personal advice about women at this time ? I will not say that it was useless, for I see the dangers of complacency in my area, but, sincerely, I think I have become a very different man during the last two years - at least in terms of the practical question of mastery and self-knowledge. I stay in touch with Ferenczi about my analysis, and I was able to bring her good news every time.

We had a meeting on Thursday, where Bryan presented the case on which he had sent you some notes ; it provoked a good discussion. Forsyth and his men are promising. Hart was also present, but hardly participated. Constance Long was there, return five weeks of "analysis" with Jung; she said there have been a lot of fun (Have fun a true analysis, this is a shame !). The case, you remember, was that of a man who managed all, but who had a sexual fixation on masochistic fantasies which left him no desire to have sex with women. We learned that the true explanation was that he hid in his "job" - have a house of his own instead of pantoufler, and he hid feigning helplessness, was purely symbolic and had a secondary meaning ! ! She has been foolish from start to finish and so Jung repeated like a parrot that can do good in the eyes of discrediting undecided as Eder and Hart.

Sachs was excited by a passage of H. G. Wells, I enclose, and contain most of your theory of taboo. I know that Wells got there three years ago, bringing together the writings of Darwin, Frazer, Robertson Smith, and other, but it does not measure the extent of its accidental discovery. It is never further evidence of the inevitability of your theory.

The British Medical Journal this week contained no more letters on the PsA, but an account of the new review of Jelliffe, in which they welcomed the conversion of Jung as a "return to a more healthy life3 ». Our opponents are on his relapse diagnosis more accurate than himself and his followers. The passage, Did you read the note in penetrating Stekel Zentralblatt [of October4] December? "It is as fine as spiteful revenge, the young to the [Wiener] School takes, he Sadger as the sole representative “train[in]bre-responding Viennese School” parading in the yearbook can (5). "But he is too polite when he adds," Are gehört dies in das der Kapitel “aconscious malice”6."I was very upset by the report that Stekel has made some of my articles7. It has changed each citation, to the point of making absurd or outrageous ; and "a possible cause" it becomes "the main cause", etc. In a report, he quotes a paragraph full of ten lines, reportedly taken from my article, but I've never written or seen anywhere. I thought he write an open letter of protest, but I abandoned the project (it cost me a lot), pen-ing that it is better to ignore the issue. I guess it would also be your attitude ?

Side work, the situation is excellent. One of my patients has gone, his case does not lend, another because she had finished, but I still have six hours per day, with materials exceedingly interesting. I feel much more confident and able to work than ever before, I believe and succeed. A case of manic-depressive typical projects more light on this state. Everything happens, in my eyes, as if there was no such disease, certain cases involving psychoneurosis, others paraphrenia (particularly, of paranoia), the primacy of affective symptoms replacing other distortion mechanisms (as sometimes happens in dreams). But I'll get longer again.

Cher ami,

It seems that the case is a great thing Jelgersma. I had already received, by Renterghem, before your letter, brochures and a copy of the newspaper. I received the following day a letter from him, which confirms everything that you tell, and is very friendly. Here is a psychiatrist who swallows Official psychoanalysis Ugly! What do not we see!

I will send you a letter as soon as Ferenczi has sent me and it has been read Wednesday. Heller intends to write and push for a German edition. The text would not be appropriate at all for the Zeitschrift, since it does not, I believe, an inch beyond the’ Interpretation of Dreams. I just finished, there was one hour, the manuscript of "Contributions to the history of the Psychoanalytic Movement". They are en route to Budapest and they will succeed since there, as a first contribution to the Jahrbuch from me. The work was difficult. I have nothing else to tell you that the well-known words : Courage Casimiro! If you will send me your comments and corrections, I promise you will be very grateful. Ferenczi do the same.

Our plans for this summer are at zero. We are no longer a family, more than three old people. Even my young child wants to go this year alone in England, your wife remembers certainly. We still do not know what a revolution the newcomer is expected to bring Hamburg 1.

With cordial greetings to you and yours, Your faithful

Freud.

Dear Professor,

Everything seems to be going well for the Jahrbuch; I hope that the writers quickly deliver their work. The report has already reached Sadger. I myself am still in the "drive to see", I hope to have finished in a week or two; I then put my account.

We had, there a few weeks, very satisfactory meeting of our group, which included 4 Jung reports on the case. There reigns the most comprehensive agreement.

Today, in this dark time, a ray of light. Renterghemthe sent me a newspaper which is a detailed account of the rectorial speech Jelgersma, psychiatrist Leiden, which focused on the unconscious 2. As you may- be unaware, I'll talk briefly : J.

A very thorough, one somme, approval and without restrictions or clauses. I just sent Ferenczi a short extract from the minutes of Holland, and I asked him to ask Jelgersma allow the translation of his speech to the Zeitschrift.

It remains for me to greet you cordially hastily, of famile to family.

Cher Ami,

Here, I had dinner and I learned writing by Rank that you had written criticizing the latest manifestation of Jung. Your causticity made me very happy. Our number is critical and rich content, unfortunately, printing has not started.

I can only, for you and for Hungary, public discussion of your project. Your temperament and your repartee guarantee perfectly the outcome. The public interest in the psychoanalytic declines probably also in Russia, Poland, etc., where it was not properly

established during the first period of invasion. It's not like Germany and America.

I would be delighted if you could bring your friend to try out for the two drawings of Moses. Those of Miss Wolf (1) unsatisfactory. The engraver Max Pollak, who "chisel engraved" my portrait Heller (2), has now promised to provide these drawings also. But that should not hold you back. My hesitations are not overcome and I certainly shall prevent the publication if the designer can not compete effectively, this is- ie, first, convince me.

I write, with great zeal, "History of the psychoanalytic movement." I hope to have worked quite well on Sunday Jung, and thus closed the chapter. Two- I send the manuscript first? He would then return it to me with your comments, so he can go, via Vienna, par Hitschmann, by Abraham.

Health and consultations going well at the moment. At home, almost everything is in order about. At the end of the month, when the work will be started, you should again visit us here. Loe is much wiser, moreover, she has left pyelitis (3) confirmed, and its share of real pain; a CAS mixte, it is always unpleasant. The presence of the new Jones (4), she must marry in May, him good.

Sincerely, Madame G. also,

your Freud

Budapest, the 9 February 1914

Dear Professor,

Despite your incentive to return to work now peaceful, I could not help but respond as it should in this article Jung, an insolence and a claim unsurpassed (See Archives of Psych.[ologie]). I sent the critical Rank, pour la magazinethe.

After years of honeymoon which psychoanalysis has enjoyed in Budapest, it now appears that the resistance becomes more serious. This is the output of Apathy that prompted the League of Social Sciences to return to the idea floated last year, but refused by me at this time : give voice to the supporters and opponents of a public discussion Psycha. I still owe them the answer; I had decided to refuse new, and I'd still, if the arguments of my friend I had not Ignotus somewhat shaken. I.[gnotus] believes that we should not reject the offer abruptly Society of Social Sciences (the only circle which we can expect some support and, in case of brutal attacks, we defend). If I refuse, I think it scrolls, which could affect more the reputation of psychoanalysis, already bad also, etc…

Finally, I relented to the point of being ready to start the discussion, the following conditions :

I can not, a priori, recognize any of those interested more or less in psychoanalysis as followers of Freudian psychoanalysis, fault of their views on matters of detail of the questions that interest us. I consider myself today (until further notice) as the only, here, who understand and practice psychoanalysis in your direction. One, therefore, we want to discuss on Freudian psychoanalysis, that gives me the right to respond immediately to each intervention.

Without pretending to think that this discussion has merit (a) to serve something or even to persuade or would undermine- this one between, I do wish, however, not excluded that I can take opponents by the horns and semi-opponents, psychoanalysts wild and tame (a new category) and I am able to demonstrate coram publicum (b) nature of fools and their ignorance, which, ultimately, after so many years of silence, would do me good, me too,

But I expect, to meet, you tell me what you think about this project. I do not want to be dragged into mindless action.

What you wrote again on the "déjà vu" *** 2 ? I am very curious to hear.

I look forward to the correction of Moïse and I hope my friend will prove Berény best designer that protected Heller (3).

8 February 1914 Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19

My dear Jones,

I understand that you complain of not receiving letters from me. The truth is that I'm writing and working every hour of freedom to the article on the ψα movement to appear in the Yearbook. I've made good progress. I settled his account in the first swindler today, and hopes to finish with the other Sunday. So far, I filled 60 large pages (1).

The strike is over, you will soon see that presses running again. Our interest to leave our critical number.

In the case of Moses, I become negative, the last artist I consulted showed me how artists proceed in the matter and made me fear an overly trench. The meaning is not of great importance to these gentlemen, they only care line, of form, matching contours. They give the Lustprinzip. I prefer caution.

News Loe. She became more reasonable and accessible to ψα since the arrival of Davy(2). Their marriage can be arranged. Together, the problem is solved. Kaufmann found a good deal of pus in his urine and was diagnosed pyelitis of the left side. She has fever. His case is mixed ; comforted by the concession of organic disease, she no longer denies the hys-theria additional. As she going through a bad patch, it is not progressing in the renunciation of morphine. She will spend two weeks in Paris with him to find his brother in Chicago. The treatment of kidney begin to return, if possible. On the nervous, this is a very nice case, everything is explained by his relationship with his mother.

I have a little progress on the issue of sado-masochism and the castration complex, I want a key point in the mechanism of the neuroses. The choice of subject sex. may be influenced by sex of parent forbidding, opposite thereto ; and therefore, early sexual inhibition may even have a big part in determining the homosex (3). I beg you to keep these things for you, and your own work.

This. censeo (4): Be careful with women and do not waste this life time.

Hamill (Chicago) has announced the 12 March. I received a letter from Bryan a case of horse masochist, with good marks. I advised him to keep the treatment, although treatment options are thin. Now again I deserve your good news

You faithfully Freud

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

First, regarding the joint extracts. It is (1) translation of Sappho to the loved object, which nicely illustrates the relationship between Libido and Angst describing the symptoms of a Angstanfall, (2) an excerpt from an interesting press exposing design Hamlet, and (3) correspondence of the ψα published to date in the British Medical Journal, key letters are marked with a cross in the margin. Would you be kind enough to return the? You will see that the para-noïaque Mercier, son (1) a French father who defended the "purity of English spirit" and abhors everything that comes from the continent, is stuffed into a hornet's nest. The four letters this week, including Stoddart, Director of Bethlem Asylum and well-known psychiatrist, are favorable. The editor, however, rejected a letter from Eder (I wrote) which merely contest the citations made by Maeder and Mercier was written with great suavity. Generally, therefore, the situation is quite good, and any fair play has not gone of old England(2).

No news from you for a long time, I was wondering if there were further complications with Loe, that would require some time to adapt. I'm glad to hear it gets better, but I am anxious to know what happened, if Herbert Jones is still there, what they decided, if it comes to London, etc. She did not write at all.

I'm glad you liked Louis, I was afraid that you will not find too obvious. It interested me a historical perspective, and as a demonstration of contributions that can bring ψα historical problems, but perhaps on a psychiatric (paranoia against hypochondria).

Jung sent a circular, and we all vote at our meeting next Thursday. In Journal oj Mental Science October seems a very remarkable account of the trial Wandlungen Jung, signed by a certain Alexander Neuer (unknown to me, and that is not in the directory of doctors)(3). This is a follower of Adler, he traces Jung Adler (not a historical perspective) and it is very insightful about "the veiled attack, but wild "Jung against you. If you want, I could get a copy of the magazine.

I discovered that the three stages of mental development of mankind according Count (we vainly sought last year) stages are religious, metaphysical and positivist: Your originality is no begun. The complete series animism, mythology, religion, philosophy, science, it omits the first two, – characteristics of its period ! I'm overwhelmed from all sides, and am delighted to learn that the same applies to you. What are you writing now ? I hope I did not bore you too.

Sincere friendships,

Faithfully and cordially

Jones.

Cher Ami,

The only good news : strike 1 ended, you can go. If anything, except that I write, I always write 2, and I do not have time for this.

This morning, Magnus Hirschfeld was there, and at noon we expect van Eeden (3) who gave a lecture here with Heller and Rank.

Your bragging about your health and your second edition touch me so nice.
