08-04-1914 Jones to Freud

8 April 1914

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

Thank you very much for your letter and welcome rich. I'm sorry that the news about Loe were not able to be better. Pain left side must be hysterical. The last time we made the left kidney, we all had a twist to the idea of the urethra, a tissu cicatriciel, etc., but we nothing found that could explain the pain, even if, since then, another calculation has been formed. This is an interesting lesson on indirect effects of organic neurosis. Hysterical retention of urine America, cystitis due to infection by catheter, ascending pyelitis with concretion calculation around, favored by intestinal toxins due to constipation hysterical.

I wish I knew one day, for my benefit, the reason for the hatred they devote myself. It preceded the start in Canada, it could be caused by some "infidelity" on my part. I always attributed to a miscarriage (confirmed by what she said in Toronto during a hysterical frenzy), despite all its Denega-tions, and what you say about the relationship of the mother to the alimentary canal seems to corroborate this view ; thereafter I became a mother. Is it just ?

I am delighted that my response to the proposal of Abraham is in agreement with your views. It is always unsatisfactory not reach a conclusion clear-cut, but I have felt unable. The idea of an attack against the Zentral inspires me some hesitation, because it would be so obviously an excuse had better engage in battle on the real reasons for the objection. Maybe we meet in Berlin on the last Sunday of May, before the groups disperse for the summer (Sachs return to London at about the same time), and discuss the final campaign.

I am very satisfied with the work done here by the company and, d'ici a an, hope to have four highly trained men. This is not much, but the men of this kind are rare in our work. The general interest in ψα in England is growing day by day, and everything seems satisfactory.

Abraham fulfills its obligations as a true professional writer, and I'm sure he will be very effective. Je lui ai adressé mon Therapie-Referat (1) last week; Perhaps you will be good enough to criticize the general remarks concluding (the text is now in Sachs).

Your picture has caused me a great shock when I opened the roll. The expression seemed more "concerned" that meditative, nose was broken, and lips carelessly executed. However, I found that by going to 3 m., and reminding me that it was a burning impressionist, not a photograph, he took another aspect that was interesting. I do not find it particularly good, but it makes a good state of mind. It is clever, but not great.

What is your next step work ? I hope you will continue with the series of «ADVICE (2) » [Recommendations], whose need is acute.

Morton Prince comes to London next week to give a lecture (3), probably go down there with me. It makes a better impression in person and through his writings.

On a personal level, new here : my new stepmother, that is a vulgar, began to quarrel with my sisters before turning against me so she just quarreled with my father (4). I'm sorry, I love it because despite its weaknesses, but perhaps that is it has the advantage of increasing my independence. I am fully recovered, and even rheumatism has completely disappeared. I'm leaving tomorrow for three days in Paris. It will be a change plai-ing, I have friends and to see.

I have little prospect of writing any article whatsoever in the coming months, because other tasks keep me going (contributions to society, work of teaching, translation, etc.). However, I sent some contributions to the Rank Magazine (5), here at the priorité. Rank is certainly very busy up ground lost to the printers' strike.

Sincere friendships

Yours

Jones.

Cher ami,

Hitschmann phoned me this morning to tell me that the patient[1] Berlin came. Thus was ended a slight concern. We thought that your shipment was suffering, but we dared not we include the cases in which it would befallen.

Side Sadger, especially do not let nothing disturb, and insist that everything be eliminated is wandering and aggressiveness. It is rare that we can tolerate S. without censoring. The same, it is really unnecessary to make claims for Stekel.

"Persecution" is the term that Adler himself used; I will replace in accordance with your wishes. Instead of : the "dirty" [unclean] A spirit. Hoche, I will : the evil spirit ".

You are also a buyer for Narcissism, it touches me deeply and tightens further the ties that bind us. On this point, I feel very strong to severe impairment. I will insert the point you want on that one misses sublimation in Jungian therapy. Moses is the anonymous, firstly by amu-ment, secondly because I am ashamed of her character dilettante obvious, which is also difficult to escape in the works for Imago; Finally, because, more than habit yet, I doubt the results and I did not published until pressed by writing.

The judgment you about burning matches many opinions here. I heard harsher judgments and other more enthusiastic.

The little work "On Dreams"[2] was published yesterday in the English translation of Eder.

Apart from this, nothing new : calm, perhaps, before the storm.

I cordially greet you, you and your dear wife, and I wish you to be quickly rid the inevitable childhood illnesses, which is much better, as can be seen, get rid sooner than later.

Your Freud.

Post-scriptum.

J'ai reçu le premier numéro de la Journal for Sexology. I wanted to make my contribution depend on the position that emerges in relation to psychoanalysis. But the thing is not very attractive. There is a note of the seedier in the article Eulenburg (p. 9), and an account of Saaler, that considers the work of Stekel on fetishism is a measure of the current state of psychoanalysis. This reinforces for me to be even more cautious.

The Company has decided to recognize Fliess. It is well, because it is the only original spirit among them and has a bit of truth unknown. But the enslavement of our sexual biology to psychoanalysis fliessienne would not be a lesser evil than his enslavement to an ethic, metaphysics, or something similar. You know, you know its inability psychology, his mind systematic physicist. Left = female = subconscious anxiety =. In all cases, we must maintain our independence and assert our rights equal. A la fin, we can meet with all the sciences parallel.

Cher Ami,

I have not been able to obtain sleeper tickets, I have to take the risk that arises. I can not bring myself to now specify the return trip. Certainly, I canceled the patients until Wednesday morning, but if I am ready to leave Brijuni on Monday, and nothing to do on Tuesday, Vienna. Much will depend on the approval of the stay; be bound in advance also has its drawbacks.

You will be surprised to see me coming with someone else. Annerl has whooping cough and naturally can not accompany us, she wisely inclined itself suggested that I take someone else in his place. Rank a accepté, So our stay and share. Nous serons tout «magazine».

Since your departure, bad time, overwork and indisputable intolerance tobacco. I have also done nothing since.

These days are dominated by a small fright, I hope, eventually be reduced to nothing. The package was sent to Abraham Hitschmann, the 1he month, with the manuscripts of the Jahrbuch is, to date, not yet arrived. It is hard to imagine what would happen if he was really lost. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow (1), but this is a warning, must make a copy of each manuscript.

Good news from Hamburg, my wife back at the end of the month, Oli on Wednesday to share his journey in Egypt.

The translation of the little dream Eder (2) my hands since yesterday. Otherwise, nothing new.

I bring a pen, with a card Loe.

Dear Professor,

About your two manuscripts. I have already spoken of 1′ "History". I read it several times and I make myself better and better account what constitutes important weapon. After much thought, I also think that everything that concerns people should remain unchanged. I just want a formula, one, be avoided : you say that Adler had complained to your persecutions. I fear that this word is disastrous. A. defend himself being accused of paranoid. An expression that makes a sound less pathological - something like "attacks" - would certainly be preferable.

I do not quite understand why you are not satisfied with the Narcissism. I find the whole brilliant work, and perfectly convincing in every respect. I will not go into the details of the approach, but only a point off, namely, analysis particularly successful delirium observation, its relationship to the moral conscience, etc. In terms of practice, developments on the ego ideal are of particular value. Long been, I thought these analyzes, and every sentence I read, I was able to guess the rest. Especially, the distinction of the ego ideal and sublimation itself is something I've always told my patients, without giving it a precise formulation also. Could I, again, make a proposal? I think this is the point that would put most clearly highlight the contrast between the Jungian therapy and psychoanalysis. The "vital tâche» [Mission in life] and all similar notions (including the prospective trend of the unconscious) are nothing other than an appeal to the ego ideal and therefore a path that misses the real possibilities of sublimation (with uncon-scious intention to avoid). Perhaps it would be useful to write a passage on this point?

I now expect the Moses [1] with great anticipation. But I do not understand very well xxx [2]. Do not you think that we still recognize the paw of the lion?

Our group will meet in May with the theme discussion : attitude towards the Oedipus in childhood. I hope that interventions, for at least one part, be worth to be published.

I received, there a few days, engraving with etching Pollak (3). I think IA is set to turn what is most successful, while in terms of the expression, must begin somewhat familiar; but then, we appreciate. The entire composition, in particular the distribution of black and white, is very successful.

Recently, I got a bookstall, by chance, your work on coca (1885), and I read it yesterday.

I hope, dear Professor, your health, meantime, has again improved. Your son will have breakfast, also, made great strides, as I hope and will not be ignored any longer the pleasure value of the feed. The rest, we had the same problem with our two children!

The trip to Italy, we projected, unfortunately can not take place.

With cordial greetings, as well as those of my wife, to you and yours.

Votre Karl Abraham.

Cher ami,

Attached letter from Jones. It is remarkable to see how each of us, alternately, is captured by the impulse to hit mortally, so that other, are obliged to retain. I suspect that this will happen we Jones the next action plan. On this occasion, function of the collaboration within the Full Committee manifest. We repar-lerons of this. Critical number of the Zeitschrift just published, we save perhaps some decisions.

You do not say when you will make the short trip that you've earned.

Since I ended Narcissism, I'm in a bad-vaise password. Frequent headache, tional difficulties intestinal, already working with a new idea that will increase the difficulties of the summer, since it necessarily involves reside in a quiet place and therefore excludes a stay at the hotel. Generally, our summer, so far, has all of the Sphinx.

I cordially greet you, you and your dear wife.

Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19

Dear Jones,

Your letter has arrived one day after I posted mine. The same morning, I have read your clever response to the proposal of Abraham and, in the afternoon- noon, I knew the details of your illness by a report Lina Loe. Eh bien, I'm really glad that you are so quickly restored and that you could count on your friends. Promise not to repeat.

Your previous letter reminded me that I was mistaken in believing you have kept the results of the examination of Loe. As I can assume that nothing would interest you more, I begin this letter (intended to be longer than usual, because I suffer from migraine, d’indigestion, etc.) tracing what I missed. Examination showed a slight pyelitis (not serious) of both sides, cystitis was not expected (without symptoms), un pure gauche (painful-ous) in good condition, and right kidney bad state; it does not explain the constant pain left side (torsion, scar or Hysteria), or enlightened state of the left ureter, expected to be expanded and capable of holding concretions. Radio shows have something dark on a corresponding point [at point] Part [coarse(1)] of the urethra in question, even if, of course, I can not make anything of this photograph. It has not been very well for the exam, my impression is that she now plunges into the neurosis which can be useful in case of postponement of marriage.

She now has a theoretical interest in the ψα, lend themselves readily to the analysis, while remaining firmly convinced (ie, decided) that do not change anything gera-. I know (not her) she intended to give her father a child, […(2)], accumulating the contents of this food system, and infuriating against mother, which caused a "miscarriage", which had destroyed the child training enemas daily. Revulsion came after she took a husband (you know) who has served two terms paternal important (one being "to help the father", other, "Show his penis to the child") ; she has turned into her mother, and from the mother and are constantly arguing in his soul.

My interesting "Verschreiben" has been arouse your suspicion. But remember that I did not try to hide, and I even caught your attention on him(3). A few days earlier, I made the same mistake with Rank, perhaps with the same undesirable result. I complained of the unreliability and neglect Reik, Rank and Sachs and as I have certified, I pronounced "Rank" instead of "Reik (4) ». But no reproach would be unfair in the case of Rank. The explanation lies elsewhere. This is a common trick of my unconscious to supplant someone I do not like a better (see the first dream of "Irma Injection(5)»). Rank instead of Reik is the equivalent of thinking: For why can not it be like you ? It's veiled tenderness, just like in your case. You may recall that after the Munich Congress(6) I could not pronounce the name "Jung" and I had always replace "Jones".

Your letter to Abraham seemed convincing us all (Ferenczi is this Sunday) ; our thoughts were already engaged on the same track. It is impossible to accelerate Yearbook, the next deadline is the end of July. Maybe an attack could be risky side total inactivity and laziness of the Central ; there is no trace of Correspondentzblatt since September. The only qualm is that we would be unhappy to have, so better not to press.

The activity report of your letter (not perdue) was very promising, and epi-sode of amusing crocodile. I'm sure next year you will captain at the head of the army.

Fisher Unwin (I never know if I give you the news for the first or second time) negotiates the English edition, not only the’ «Everyday life», but also Totem & Taboo of Joke (7). Federn have the good fortune to go to America to continue treatment of a rich man, he desperately needed.

The War Office, Washington asked for my portrait collection of the Medical Museum and Library. The etching performed at the request of Heller is now out ; some friends find it excellent, la famille abominable ; Loe is of the opinion.

Now that our critical issue is published, waiting to see the effect(8).

With my best wishes and all my friends

well you

Freud

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

Today I received your letter dated 19, and I see that my letter had to be delayed or lost. I wrote six pages full on 13, and have pos-tions at midday, the 14. Perhaps you have finally received.

I sincerely congratulate you on the birth of your first grandchild, and I'm sure you are proud of.

Your comments on Loe interested me (I dare say it is easier to understand why I loved that why I also hated), but I am anxious to know if the urological examination took place, and what are the results.

My own illness, I did you a description in the lost letter(1)(it was not enough interest for me to repeat), now belongs to the past, and I'm back to work hard.

I will report on the book Prince the’ Unconscious (that, of course, has nothing to do with the true unconscious(2), Eder and ask about the Tuckey (3). Constance had written Long before its contribution to meet Jung, and all that it can have value, it owes to Eder and Bryan, who gave the examples, etc. How do you interpret your Verschreiben in this regard (Perhaps he has been written before [you] she has not heard the gospel of Jung (4) ?

Before this letter, you have received my answer to Abraham, unless it is also not lost (it was the same date as the other letter). I'd wait for the release of Yearbook. Y has he a chance it is advanced?

Let me know, please, if my letter does not arrive, because in this case I will repeat some of its contents (what is happening in London, etc.).

Sincere friendships

Yours

Jones.

Dear Professor,

Hurriedly, only this : I need your explanation yesterday (1) the "masculine protest", the outcome of a strength than a year and a half, and from the first day. The patient (engineer) always shuddered with horror at the idea, especially, tearing and fraying pieces of meat. (Whenever, I interpreted it correctly as castration anxiety.) Today, inter alia, following associations: (1) half broken tooth, terribly painful. (2) Three iron bars attached by rings and broken in two. (3) A cooked sausage. When I told him he was sorry for his penis, that is to say, for his manhood, he should sacrifice my love if he wanted to meet me as a woman, resistance is suddenly undone, he stopped and began to rail against working properly (2).

Yesterday already, the enormous importance of knowledge about the true nature of the masculine protest I immediately jumped out at me. I think I would never have found this myself, because of my own unconscious complexes similar.

I am pleased to send you this confirmation so quickly.

Cordially,

For example : "It would thus seem that in this dream, he was identified with the castrated mother and was then discussed against this identification. ” If you want to be sexually satisfied by the father would he say about, ” you have to admit it, like your mother, the castration. My dear Jones,

Is it true that you are sick ? You do not write seems to confirm the rumor. Tell me more, I hope it is nothing more than your rheumatism.

Today I received two books, you need to know, Treatment by Hypnos, etc., de Lloyd Tuckey, last edition, evoking ψα in the preface and a special chapter of Const. Long(1), and Unconscious, Morton Prince(2). Testing of Long bears no trace of Swiss infection (Perhaps he has been written before [you(3)] she has not heard the gospel of Jung(4)) ; as to the’ Unconscious Prince, it probably has nothing to do with genuine force with which we battalions few hours a day. I'm sure you'll do a review of these two books in the Magazine (5).

I finished my two jobs, Posts et Narcissm, and am available for new adventures. You should not rely on my enthusiasm in either case (6). Moses is just out of the presses (7), It is probably best not to recognize this child in public.

My daughter Hamburg (8) just given birth to a boy, Wolfgang Ernst, the 11 this month, everything went well and everything is going well at the time it is, the boy is not very strong and has not yet shown his survival instincts sucking what is given in abundance. I hope he can still learn.

Regarding Loe, we are on excellent terms, I begin to understand its history, that is very interesting, and I confess strongly admire his persistence and energy, part of which is channeled towards further objectives irrational. As you know, his case was revealed mixed, and it is difficult to say precisely what is done mixing. Herbert Jones leads always impeccably, fate could well make the best of it.

Abraham has shown great talent in the organization of Yearbook. His proposal is certainly keep you busy at this time.

Lucy Hoesch Ernst me left yesterday to my relief. It is a burden.

Hoping to hear from you as soon as possible.

Faithfully to you
