Dear Professor,

In addition to congratulations, I'm happy to inform you that I would spend Sunday (22 March) Vienna, with you to make the rounds of all the personal questions, professional and scientific, before the journey to Easter,

Kindly answer me if I can come without being intrusive.

Greetings from

Ferenczi

As for the plan of Abraham (1), in advance, I tell you that I recommend to wait for the effect of the bombs first (2) and to advance, possibly, after the publication of the Jahrbuch.

1. It was not published an abridged version of the letter of Abraham 16 III 1914, so that the plan can only be indirectly inferred from the response of Freud : « … your pro-position of aggression against Jung ". Freud à Abraham you 16 III 1914, Freud correspondence- Abraham, p. 171.

Cher ami,

I send you tomorrow Narcissism; It was a difficult childbirth, it has all the deformations. Obviously be, I do not like it particularly, but now, I can not deliver other. It still needs to be retouched very. (You see what are my thoughts.) I ask you to decide for yourself where I have to insert your first job (Salzburg), as, generally speaking, I am grateful for all forms of objections. I will take your comments on the "Contributions" correcting proofs.

We need to discuss tomorrow night with Rank and Sachs aggression against your proposal Jung. I am eager to know the answer especially in London, where difficulties could easily appear.

I think things are going very well in Hamburg and my daughter continues to demonstrate courage and wisdom. It can already feed, but the little animal does not drink yet as it should. It is strange that even these vital primary instincts have so much trouble waking. I have always believed that the words of Mephistopheles the student ("Thus in the beginning a child reluctantly accepts the womb[1]») were inaccurate. It's true though, but subsequently also, I hope : "But soon, he enjoys feeding[2]. "Your portrait will return tomorrow at the coach and then take the place of Jung. It's not you full justice; but I thank you very much.

Deuticke expressed a genuine respect for your business editor. In fact, we, all these days, our deployed forces in the work. I must also tell you that your article is excellent locomotion[3]. In the theory of sexuality also, I have not found a better argument in favor of "muscular eroticism" that

analysis abasies culminating in the memory-fantasy [Invented memories] : learning to take his first steps on the mother's body (land).

Your Freud.

I cordially greet you, you and your dear wife.

13 March 1914

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

I am in the unusual position of having to respond to two letters from you, and I have many things to say, so get ready, please, a long epistle. The reason is that my health problems were all disturbed. I suffered a severe cellulite starting in the neck, and touching all the glands on both sides, deep and superficial, from the skull to the shoulder blades and, lower, the clavicles. I saw my patients every day, sauf un, but I could do nothing else because of the pain, etc. It is now much better and I'll be fully recovered.

So I was unable to attend the communication McDougall on sex drive, à la Royal Society of Medicine1, but I dictated my bed a long contribution Hart read at the meeting2. There was a crowd. During the discussion, two psychologists spoke of the drive in general, while the other four speakers were psychoanalysts, so that we were above. [No opposition3.] I organized our first discussion about dividing and delegating to each of our four representatives the party for whom he was well armed, cover the entire history of the land and to the maximum print4. This will contribute significantly to counter the offensive British Medical Journal, and we will soon have other opportunities also. The attack killed Mercier did any of us, and as a Welshman and a Jew will be President and Corporate Secretary5, there is no fear that such attacks can cause what we have learned from Zurich to call a "reaction Aryan" ; my ancestors were in Europe before the Aryans, This may explain in part why I do not believe in pride knowing that tout the "Aryans".

Our company was held last night, et Mrs.. Eder we read a translation of your article on Dynamik der Übertragung6. It was discussed with intelligence and mental acuity, evidence that men learn quickly; we are all good friends (except Miss Long), and meetings are very popular. There are currently in London between thirty and forty patients ψα.

Circular Abraham arrived this morning, and I sent him a letter which will be sent shortly certainly. I hope you received at the time it is the letter Jelgersma. It was very rewarding for us. I met a few years ago in Amsterdam, and I wanted an honest man.

I completely rewrote my essay on the Virgin for Yearbook (7), to add precious materials and deepening that I think is important in the theory (relationship between flatus and castration) ; the last part was sent to Sachs two weeks ago. Late has been a fun episode. Any part of the crocodile based on the fact that these animals, like frogs, have no par-ties external genital8. But reading the book on Osiris Wallis Budge9, which by the way is excellent, I was horrified to learn that the Egyptians were performing certain rites with penis crocodile. Panic, I called several professors of zoology, which none could give me the information I wanted ; the next, I went to the Zoo to take the case to clear. None of the guards knew ; It only remaining thing to do : using rods, overthrow a male on the back, etc. This task proved extremely difficult and has created an exciting scene. I discovered, what I then had confirmation manuals, the animal's penis is completely concealed in the cloaca, which confirmed the hypothesis ψα following which he was to be invisible from the outside. What austere life than a regular doctor versus a life of psychoanalyst !

Herewith an interesting document illustrating the nature of American psychologists.

Flournoy teaches a course on ψα in Geneva, at the Faculty of Sciences; I asked Claparède us to summarize for Magazine, but I do not know if it will10.

The attitude of Loe, in his famous letter, was much better than it has ever been (towards ψα). She now admits that the conclusions of the ψα are quite correct, although they are not of much help ; "This is a science, not treated. "The urological examination he has held ? Of course I am eager to know the results. My great fear is that it reserves the right to use morphine, and that it operates at a difficulty will arise in his life. In his letter, she wrote that your youngest girls had a fever, I hope it's long gone now.

I received a mass of material Heller of Zeitschrijt. Blüher no debits that nonsense11 ; he never defends his own homosexuality. I see that Ferenczi was a flurry of activity in recent times.

I now come to your letters, which I will respond point by point. I will write upon Wells for Varia (12). Of course, you are right about Stekel, but it is a good exercise in self-control ; this month, he had the effrontery to write a paragraph to complain that one critic had distorted his words !

I look forward to your article you yearbook13, and I imagine that events arrive within a fortnight. For political reasons, could we speed things up and remove the Yearbook early May ? Where is the article on Narcissmus14 ? Could you tell me what specific problems you are addressing ?

My exasperation towards Putnam was only momentary, because I recognize all that is admirable and lovable in her. But his inability to draw the ultimate consequences of what he knows, eg Jung, is sometimes challenging.

The fate hands us withdrew the question of the responsibility of passages added in my criticism of Jung. After you have written to ask me to review it myself, Rank wrote me otherwise. What Heller went against in speaking tests. I have corrected (there were some translation errors, but I agree with all additions) the same day, Rank writes but now it was too late, because they could no longer delay the release of the Zeitschrijt;15. Very funny!

If you cite Verschreiben was fine by me, it was not quite unconscious. I got used to address Loe giving his old title, by which is probably still to call in the middle (Pension), but I guess I should stop doing now.

Tonight, I see in the British Medical Journal a scathing critique of my book, which the author makes his bread and butter by revealing his ignorance. I know for a long time, a distinguished Imbecile16.

Burrow Hamill and they can not write me for now leave America, for domestic reasons. The passage, I wanted to ask about Frau Hoesch-Ernst. Is it still in treatment ? It can not be an easy case.

I finally finished, hoping to have from you soon, and friendships

your faithful

Jones.

Dear Professor,

Tomorrow, a small package will be shipped to your address; it contains the gift by which, long, I wanted to thank you for your portrait, that you had offered. There is some time, Stanley Hall had asked me to donate a photograph of me at the seminar of Psychology Worcester. This is how you will reach a copy of the photograph that I had made for the occasion.

Your manuscript is on my table for more than a week. I read it several times. Concrete, I do not see what I could do to note, except that I found in my own thoughts every word, there is a relief to see it all in black and white; how you did it is particularly satisfying. - I will mention a few points altogether secondary :

  1. P. 20, you say how you came to Rank, but his name is not mentioned. I do not know if this is intentional, but I wanted to point out.
  2. P. 27, there is certainly an omission : "Havelock Ellis, who had followed its development with sympathy. "It certainly lacks at this location : "From the beginning".
  3. The qualifier you assign to Hoche does he not have unfortunate consequences? You are right, of course, but it may be better to remove.

I could not mention anything else. Otherwise, at most, I appreciated being able to, in my capacity as editor, read the manuscript before other. This was compensation for the hard work of the last few months.

I just finished my work on the drive to see. Now, I need to overcome any force my account. I hope that I will receive all contributions in the course of this month.

I return herewith the letter Jelgersma, I had been sent by Jones; it made me very happy. - You should definitely know that I correspond frequently with all members of the Committee. - For Reik, I do my best; but it is not easy to find something.

I ask the question to our group's participation in the research on children [Children Research] and then give you response. ‘

With cordial greetings. Yours

Abraham.

Dear Doctor !

I am very glad to hear that you are well and I think that soon the precariousness of life will not affect you more than other human beings1. The merit of the prosperity of your offspring also goes to your wife !

Your interest in Shakespeare 2 is also very pleasing. I often wonder the need for new poets from humanity. I wait with great curiosity your impressions of Rome next year. Everyone knows that the first impression is deceptive, and even disturbing.

So far this year has brought me a lot of work ; it is only now that things calmed down. What a pity that your work does little to advance theoretical. We could very well be placed in the first volume of the new Jahrbuch3. It actually has two of my work : "On Narcissism 4 "And" Contribution to the history of the psychoanalytic movement5», should, I hope, clarify my relationship with Jung. The conference of Jelgersma 6, rector of Leiden, do you have certainly not escaped.

In my family, all is well. Here, my wife left for Hamburg, where we expect soon to be raised to a higher rank, translate to the rank of major- parents 7.

I am very pleased with the appointment of Häberlin8. If you have the opportunity to talk, give him my wel-quotes. I do not think it will become an active supporter of psychoanalysis.

Recently, a colleague of me Friedländer also confirmed that he had been demoted for cheating at the game of tarot, while he was a medical officer (voluntary). This will allow you to better understand my aversion to any form of contact with the pig.

I cordially greet you and your wife

Your Freud

Dear Professor,

First (as almost always), a series of thanks : this time thank you for kindly arranged this case the trip Easter, and etching I found excellent. The recorder does not seem to be a "modern", However, it blows in his work already look a little bolder. I am convinced that this man could do something for Moses. But it would be worthwhile to also test with my friend (Berény).

The deployment of our troops against Zurich in the notebook I of IIand year is really impressive. The controversy wonderfully incisive Eitingon against sabotage the concept of the unconscious was a surprise for me

I am very busy (full almost every day); can still obtain therapeutic success - by giving much trouble, it is true – with sufficient retention of both sides.

Evening, I am so tired no other work I succeeded. I do not disagree : psyche may well play a role. The state of my nose is more satisfying, sleep yet. Maybe after Brioni!

Cordial greetings to you and all household, of
