Burghölzli Zurich, 12. VIII. 1907.

Honored Professor!

Forgive me please my long silence. During the three weeks of military service I really have not had a single moment for me. We were harnessed 5 am to 8 pm. Night, it was always dead tired. When I returned, administrative affairs of the asylum were piled up and more Pr Bleuler and the first assis-tant (1) went on holiday. This means that there was something to do. To overflow the extent, the Congress Secretariat Amsterdam started to squeeze my manuscript, that do not exist yet. So I had to throw myself headlong into the development of my lecture. This is a tough issue! Above all it is an extremely difficult task to dilute the richness of ideas, to cook this dilution and ultimately successful shot wizard to draw something homogeneous. But what seems almost impossible, is to dilute the product again to make it somewhat digestible public ignorance. I am now just at the turn of the newest web design hysteria, Detailed introduction to sexuality in the psychology of hysteria. This often makes me almost to despair. Finally I console myself always thinking that the foregoing either is not understood 99 % public, and I can say in this part about what I want. We do not understand anyway. This is a demonstration, a finding that 1907 someone said, officially, before an international conference, something about the Freudian doctrine of hysteria in a positive intention. In fact I come increasingly to the conviction that you are perfectly right to almost solely on account of the fact that the poor will not want to understand. We do all kinds of experiments on the subject. America moves well. In three weeks, six Amer Rican, a Russian, an Italian and a Hungarian were spent here. Germany fails.

As soon as I finished my lecture, this child pain, I hope you write again.

Begging you again to forgive me the long break.

your always devoted

Young.

My dear colleague,

I write to you - quickly and briefly - to reach you again before your departure and send you my greetings to the time of the great intellectual break. It will do you good. The charming trifles which is full your last letter remind me that I am also the end of my year's work. The 14 I go to the Lavarone Val Sugana South Tyrol Hotel du Lac

I would not want to have to spend during this period of your new, which are already now a real need for me - I can not fit the end of September - so I will inform you of my change of location. Around the time you defend the Amsterdam conference, I hope to stay in Sicily ner-. Despite all the distractions, some of my thoughts will be with you. May you find here- already low consideration that you deserve and want, myself that I am so very interested.

I'm already in correspondence with the Dr Abraham. Efforts should indeed concern me greatly. How is it actually? Letter and work have very favorably disposed me toward her. I expect this to work every day of your cousin Riklin. Is that the personal satisfaction that my judgment astray : I came here on a bed of highly capable men and for?

Today I received precisely Lausanne letter from a student who wants to talk about my work in a scientific evening at the docent Sternberg. Switzerland real move-ment.

Take care and do not forget completely during the long vacation your

Honored Professor!

Are you upset if I bore you with things that I have experienced personally? I would actually tell you a story that happened to me instructive in Paris. I made there the acquaintance of a Germano-American who gave me a print friendly. This is Mrs St. (1) of trente- five years. We spent a few hours together in society and we spoke of landscapes and other things indifferent. Was served black coffee. She did not take it, me making the point she could not stand the slightest sip of black coffee, she felt even the smallest amount the next. I told him that it was a nervous symptom; in any case it was only home she could not stand coffee, but when it was under different circumstances [in other circumstances (2) ], she certainly better supported. Just unfortunate that word had she missed that I was terribly embarrassed but soon I realized it had fortunately "not heard". I noted that I had not the slightest knowledge of the history of this lady. Soon after, another lady suggested that each tell a number, because such figures were always meaning. Mrs St. this : three. Knowledge of Mrs.. St. cried : "Of course, you, your husband and your dog. » Mrs St. answered : "Oh, do not, I thought that all good things come in threes! "I conclude that his marriage was barren. Mrs St. became a little silent, then said abruptly without transition : "In my dreams my father is always so wonderfully transfigured. "I learned that his father was a doctor. A few days later she presented me, despite my refusal, a magni-fic etching. Wise sat! My wife knows, she said Last : "I will announce during psychotherapy for men. »

A hysterical woman told me that from a poem by Lermontov(3) constantly turned his head. The song is about a prisoner whose only friend a bird in a cage. The prisoner is led one desire : he would once in his life, supreme act as, give freedom to be any. He opens the cage and lets his beloved bird fly. What is the supreme desire of the patient? Elle dit : "I would like once in my life help a complete freedom to obtain a psychoanalytic treatment. "There is evidence that in her dreams she is confused with me. As it recognizes, his supreme desire would be having a child of mine, that would fulfill all his desires unfulfilled- shortbread. For this course should I leave first "flying bird". (Swiss German is spoken by example : « ton ” small bird ” he has also been whistled? »

A beautiful chain, is it not? Do you know the pornographic image of Kaulbach 4 "Who wants to buy the gods of love? » (Winged phallus, that resemble cocks and engage in all sorts of games with girls.)

I have recently asked about a hysterical patient can never finish a cup of coffee. I suspected you as an analogy with feces. It is now revealed that the patient was maintained until the sixth (?) years prolapse of the anus, without coming out as she goes to the bathroom, and must always be set up by the mother. Later itchy anus, fighting in the patient sitting on the stove with the bare posterior. She fights the pain is also present hysterical heating the posterior. But his pain is localized to the hip and left leg. Paresthesia anal lasted almost until the thirtieth year. Later she tried to make them go away by lying in bed and her sister against her by heating. In the analysis, what made me pay attention to the history of the anus is it said that we should listen when the lower part of his back, that it "cracked" strangely there in the bones. In her twentieth year she had severe diarrhea. His mother wanted to call the doctor, but the patient is put into a state of anxious agitation, because she did not want to be examined, fearing that the doctor wants to examine her anus. But what terrible tortures until all that is left.

Now some mystical historical!

Of Vienna left three reformers antliropologico- medical : Mesmer — Gall — Freud. Mesmer et Gall (5) were inhibited in Vienna, Freud (accordance with the time) has not been recognized. Mesmer and Gall are thereupon went to Paris.

Mesmer's views remained confined to Paris, until Lavater (6), of Zurich, the imports into Germany, in pre-Mier to Bream. Hypnotism was again awakened in France and was imported by Trout of Zurich Germany. The first and oldest student is Forel Delbrück (7) of Bream ; He is now director of the insane asylum of the city.

Freud found its first clinical consideration Zurich. The first asylum State German Freud recognized that Bream (regardless of personal relationships with us). Furthermore Delbrück, the only assistant in German Burghölzli (AFAIK) is Dr Abraham (8) of Bremen. He came here in Berlin and has no relationship with Delbrück.

Thinking by analogies, analyzes such as your exercise-ment, bad fruit, you probably think. But it amused me. .

The dem. pr. is currently enforced rest. The i4 July I have to go for three weeks in military service9 Lausanne. Then my boss left for four weeks. I have all new asylum on the back. The outlook is bad. I hope that the work of Binswanger's coming soon. You will see that you have also mastered the secrets of the galvanometer 10. It is true that your associations are excellent!

Receive my best regards!

Your ever devoted

Young.

Anxiety neurosis and anxiety hysteria are still quite obscure things for me - unfortunately - due to lack of experience.

My dear colleague,

I am happy to see that you are back to your work Burghölzli and I am very happy with your travel impressions. You can imagine that I would very much regretted that the complex Viennese had to cope with a complex in Paris in the sharing of investment available- opment. Fortunately it is not happened and you have gathered the impression that the time of the great Charcot are gone, and that is our home, Zurich entre et Vienne, beats to the pulse of this new life of Psychiatry. And we would happily overcame a first danger.

You give me this time especially a lot of material "professional" for answers. You are right, business is good. Will it ten years and can I wait until then, it remains veiled. But the trend is undoubtedly the rise. The activity of the opponents is necessarily sterile; insult each in turn, says me (you now also) stunned, and thus ended. Its activity is consumed in it- same. But anyone who joins us can relate the results of his work, and then continue to work and relate. It is understandable that each works in its own way and brings perhaps the distortion specific to the intelligence of the thing unfinished.

It is only you that I know Bolte-Bremen. Gross's book (1) I was especially interested because it emanates from the clinical Pope Supreme, at least he was admitted by him. Gross is a highly intelligent man; for my taste, it's in the book too much theory for thin observation. The analysis is seriously incomplete - it is certainly not his fault; the principal, the path that leads to theft, is certainly right, but not sufficient in determining. Have you noticed how he is prodigal of superlatives? The only one who is not designated as "opening gaps", "Upsetting", etc., it is just me, which is an advantage. There is undoubtedly shows abnormal emotional life G[ross], you have told me. He also recalls some ancient Egyptians, who have never changed anything in their pantheon, but each new god seated and each new concept on the old, which has resulted in an incredible confusion. Gross did the same to me and a synthesis of all the ancient gods : Wernicke, Anton [2], etc. While I am a bad judge those who have the same aspirations as me; about the work of Wernicke psychoanalytic I always thought he had not been a new idea as a psychiatrist, but he had extended his mental habit to break and layered cuts.

There is almost nothing to tell about my Materials.

The same journalist 3 who welcomed the Vienna time devoted a section, also much higher, in the supplement of the Allgemeine Zeitung. He must want to get some-thing to me. Perhaps it is also the best books that we do not write anything?

The subsequent evolution of this insane who finds his brother the doctor is a brilliant experience transfer paranoid. The lady Lüders, it is of course itself again. I read the work of your student 4 with great interest and with respect to the problems of individual psychology. I am fully aware of course at any point your ideas and caution. I think it is quite right that the attitude towards what the examiner is directed first and foremost the content of responses. This is how we organize the more easily "transfer studies". I organized as a joke self-examination, making me myself reacting to stimuli words we use here. It works pretty well, and I was able to solve the most bizarre answers. A lack of experimentation was annoying in that while copying the next word mingled with the reaction to the word being precisely. For example, I responded to Book [book] by Bushrangers [bandit highwaymen], then Frog [frog] by Busch [bush]. Once everything is cleared up course. Frog had contributed to determine the response to Book, bringing me to our friend Busch.

For six weeks, the frog was ill.

Yesterday I had my first good day after several weeks of dyspepsia. Otherwise I have responded by complex personal and libido, often hidden and very artful. The Klepper [bandit] just kleptomania in the work of Gross.

You will still be mailed a small thing6 Me, a soap a colleague Hamburg extorted me. Please Judging by this motivation.

I find your references that you laboriously drawn during the hot summer months ahead. The influx of workers is a great honor, and experience of association provides good material to fill these young people. I yearn to be free the 14 this month; year I was severely tested, I was of course also made many beautiful things, including your first visit with all the expectations attached to it. I have the right to behave this year already so a bit silly, that others can more easily after work. So do not expect anything intelligent to me before I am restored. I still start to have confused the idea of working on the "epistemological difficulty of the unconscious" (7), for which I will take a few pounds in the summer.

Dr Windows (8), you know, whose criticism is not usually the strong side, I presented a paper on cases of anxiety, that was required of him by the "clinical Berlin" (!) (9). I influenced it up for cases, as an’ "Anxiety hysteria", next to the "hysteria of conversion"; I intend to defend this theoretically available one day (10), and I would recommend the meantime this view. Honored Professor!

First some communications "business" : Dr Stein1 Budapest and another neurologist, Dr Ferenczi 2, Once you want to visit Vienna and asked me to ask you when you visit would be the most convenient. Dr Stein is a very suitable, a good intel-ligence, who worked experimentally with me. There is still quite a beginner in the art, but remarkably quickly and understood it exercises effective. I think the best thing will put you directly in touch with him (Dr Stein, Semmelweis street 11, Budapest).

Muthmann was assistant to the insane asylum Basel. I unfortunately never had a personal relationship with him. I immediately ordered his book. It seems, tells me Bleuler, there was a lot of fun in a passage (corrected), which is highly significant P manly courager Wolff (3). Muthmann is also not Swiss, but may have learned what Switzerland spine.

The Surgeon General Bolte (4) Bremen, who recently sided with you, and whose work will appear in the Journal of General Psychiatry, Bremen is a, AFAIK; it is therefore a free city of the empire. The environment is apparently much.

In the same letter I send you the work of one of my students, that you may be interested in. Indeed, I believe that the basic ideas of this work is to develop a science leave statistical complexes.

Thanks to your kind sending I saw with heartfelt joy that your Psychopathology of everyday life sees its second edition. It's good that you have greatly expanded the text; more there Sample, better. I hope that soon you will also produce a new edition of the’ Interpretation of dreams (5), as it sometimes seems to me that your prophecy comes true, to know that you have drilled the next ten years. This already moving in different directions : you probably received the work'Otto Gross 6; I must say that there, I can not well allow me- suade you need more or less just be the stonemason who works unfinished dome system Wernicke 7. It is good, however, be demonstrated all lines that converge toward you. Gross work still contains many strange things, although in the end he has an excellent understanding. I am very eager to hear what you say.

What are your destiny Materials? Do you have new reports?

It may interest you to know that my patient (the. pr.) with the transfer of the brother had suddenly, last-larly, thoughts megalomaniac : she claims to have lived itself the content of the Sexual question 8 Forel, stands for parent of many distinguished people, doctors suspect all kinds of sex, wants EPU-one service assistant doctors, another (married doctor) have knocked up a patient, some girl Lüders, just a girl Skudler, Should also divorce his wife. (We call Bitch a person who has a bad sexual reputation!) I do not know anything more detailed. The doctor wants to marry her door by chance the same name as (his brother!)

My travel experiences are poor. I talked to Janet and am very disappointed. He did that quite primitive knowledge of dem. pr. The latest things, you included, it does nothing. He is buried in his drawings, and, by the bye, it is only intelligence, but not a personality, conversationalist and a flat type of bourgeois poor. A very bad joke : the splendor of treatment in isolation Dejerine (9) the Salpêtrière. All this gave me a feeling unspeakably childish, and not less puerile smoke heights which fogs every head in such a clinical. These people are fifty years behind! It took me about nerves, so I gave in London, where there is much less to seek. I am however devoted to the Loire castles. There is therefore no question of Parisian complex. Unfortunately my time is still taken. Three candidates who want to work with me I have been proposed, it is extremely international : one of Switzerland, one of Budapest and Boston. Germany will be misrepresented. The issue of a publication Archives becomes more urgent in these conditions. I want to start looking at things more closely. The question of the editor will probably difficulties. But before undertaking anything definitive in this direction, I have my rake IIand volume Diagnostic studies of association; it cost me a lot of work; for student work to give more than own work.

Binswanger jun. now working psychoanalytically in Jena. Hopefully he will leave lasting traces. His uncle would visit my. Unfortunately I do not find much time, useful if it can be.

Receive the best greetings from your always devoted

Young.

I hope that soon you will also produce a new edition of the’Interpretation of dreams (5), as it sometimes seems to me that your prophecy comes true, to know that you have drilled the next ten years.

It may interest you to know that my patient (the. pr.) with the transfer of the brother had suddenly, last-larly, thoughts mégalomamaques : she claims to have lived itself the content of the Sexual question 8 Forel, stands for parent of many distinguished people, doctors suspect all kinds of sex, wants EPU-one service assistant doctors, another (married doctor) have knocked up a patient, some girl Lüders, just a girl Skudler, Should also divorce his wife.

Young.

My dear colleague,

Good news, that Geneva also interested in the cause. Claparède Flournoy and have always shown a friendly attitude in their review. I'm very happy now that they intend to attract attention to your work with a detailed account. I certainly will take advantage of me too.

Just today I received a book by a man who seems to bear his name rightly (1), To psychology and therapy of neurotic symptoms, A pair. Muthmann (2). It focuses on the way the words "a study based on the theory of neuroses Freud". M[Uthmann] was assistant in Basel. This can not be a coincidence; a Swiss as he seems indeed to have more courage about a German free. The book is good, beautiful case histories, good results, dignified and modest; I hope this is a solid contributor manifested here. Perspective it is still lacking, it addresses what has been found in 1898 like new, he said not a word transfer.

I therefore take the word about the magazine. You agree more its necessity; we do miss little readers. Do not give ourselves a period of hesitation too long, in the fall 1908 about the first issue. Of course, you hit the nail with your observation on outpatient cases. According to their customary way of life experiences, reality is too close to women to believe in fantasy. If I wanted to organize my statements according to the indications of the maids, it would come out as negative cases. This behavior also agrees with other sexual peculiarities of this class; informed people assure me that these girls are easier coitus for example look undressed. The chance of treatment consists in that first learned so much in other cases they can tell their story themselves to these people, without waiting for their contributions. They certainly confirm RONT then; can not learn anything from their case.

Too bad my case with the cup of tea is not finished yet; otherwise it could shed light on your patient vomits when there is a crumb of bread in coffee. According to some evidence, these symptoms refer to the excremental (urine and faeces). Should enter the case starting with disgust at the corpse of the mother. Disgust at the mother probably goes back to the time of sexual initiation. I also forgot that menstrual blood is also counted among the feces. This makes it almost impossible a short outpatient cases, is the tem-poral element. In periods as short, no change psychi- that can not be accomplished, so we said nothing to a man who has known so little time.

Thank you very much for what you enrichissiez my experience by communicating if dem. pr. Your last, woman 36 years old, mother fixation, can actually be called ideal. The question : where then put libido which must be detached from the mother? can then be solved, if the thing takes shape as in other cases your, by Derou-ing [Course] : to the auto-erotic. It is interesting that the investment of the mother who succumbs to the process of repression is at once a pathological component (pensatoire com-). It is because there is excessive diversion away from father; must presuppose a preliminary stage of common childhood inclination for the father. May be important theoretically. Your intentions to travel to Paris and London show me, to my satisfaction, that the time you provide overwork happened. I wish you interesting complex in Paris, but I would not know the complex Viennese repressed by the other. The obstacle in French is probably essentially national in nature; import to France has always had difficulties. Janet is a fine intelligence, but he went without sex and can now move more; we know that in science there is no turning back. But you certainly hear many good things.

With cordial greetings, Yours

Dr Freud.

Honored Professor!

In the pause since my last letter I have been very busy, so that I am now quite diminished. At the end of last week, Claparède 1, director of the laboratory of experimental psychology in Geneva, came to me to be introduced to the technique of association experience. Your teachings have firmly taken root among psychologists Geneva, even if everything is not yet digested. The following result of visiting Claparède me back, it is true, I mainly : C[laparède] now wants to publish

in Archives of Psychology a great presentation ENSEM-ble [2] all of my work. This would again cause a symptom that is running. Flournoy [3] also looks at the extraordinary thing. Next week I have to go for ten days in Paris and London. I will give this opportunity to visit Janet and I interviewerai about you.

You do me great pleasure naturally annotating my case, because there is only way I can see how you approach a case, what you see as important and how you abstrayez more general rules. I totally agree with you when you say that the cases are not sufficiently penetrated. Undoubtedly they are not. But in the dem. praec. we learn to be content with little.

It should complete the first case, that the transposition of the brother. The morning of the wedding of her brother she suddenly had the idea to jump over a large gap pipe, four meters deep and has made a distortion pedis.

Today I bring you the following case :

Woman of thirty-six. His father was a dark character, oppressed family. As the patient she sided with the mother, which he confided his grief. It thus became friends. The patient had a girlfriend outside his mother : a woman who was also unhappy in marriage. She had no fondness for men. A 28 years old, for practical reasons, she married a younger man, which was also significantly less intellectually. Sexually it was absolutely and totally frigid desires. Gradually the mother idolized her daughter became old and feeble. The woman then said she could not abandon her mother did. Depression gradually increasing then appeared, neglect of his family, thoughts of suicide, etc. Internment. Now showing symptoms of mental decline in the level [4]. Typical catatonic depression.

Your proposal for the establishment of a separate log refers to projects that I make as. I would like to nominate d'Archives for psychopathology, because I would like to have a place where I could drop, together, the work done in our laboratory. However, I would still think carefully for a while, because at the moment the chances of success with the public, which is generally prepared and negatively, still seem problematic. It takes more than I ever earned before the second volume of my Diagnostic Studies of association [Diagnostic Association Studies], before assuming new obligations. Meanwhile we must leave for the yeast.

My polyclinic is difficult. The analysis is uneducated in a hard case. I now have a person who can not drink anything in the world for the rest of his coffee cup if there is still a bit of bread crumbs at the bottom, otherwise it must vomit. "It tickles in the neck. "When she sees a corpse, she then spit continuously for several days. This symptom seems to have appeared at the time of the death of his mother. Can you advise me?

It is fun to see how women in the polyclinic to diagnose one another their complex erotic, while they do not recognize themselves. Among uneducated, the main obstacle seems to be terribly rude transfer.

Please accept my most cordial greetings and my thanks.

Your fully committed

Young.
