22-07-1914 Freud to Jones

22 July 1914 Carlsbad

My dear Jones,

I think wise, from Putnam, you have chosen confessor, and your reply, given in a spirit truly analytical, Perhaps the best thing that you have to give. But let him do as he can, he never avoids his own hobbies. He simply said that there is an effort to sublimation at some of the best individuals, we do not contredirions, because it is indeed the case, but the simple fact spoil by mixing some philosophical theory, Hegel, Bergson or other. I am still glad to know honest and disinclined to do something ambiguous.

Summary of Jung is remarkable for its maneuvers to draw a line on the discharge, which, I think, will have its place in your paper1.

Thank you very much for your kindness to my little girl. Maybe you do not know enough. She is the most gifted and most accomplished of my children, and, what is more, she has a precious character. It only asks to learn, to see and understand the world. It does not purport to be treated as a woman, is still very far from any sexual desire and rather refusing man. It is understood between us that it should not consider marriage or the preliminaries before two or three years. I do not think she denounced the treaty (2).

You will learn, or if you know Abraham, Maeder has virtually declared that the output of the Zurich group ; he was ordered to wait until something is printed in Zurich, most likely a clear answer to my pathetic Beiträge zur Geschichte (3). Circular Abraham can accelerate the course of events (4).

I am delighted that Ferenczi spends his holidays (5) with you. I'm sorry to have « ousted (6) » (is there such a word?) this year, because I need isolation and concentration to the test Manual de Kraus (7). It's been a long time I have not had the opportunity to hear my own thoughts.

Our stay in Karlsbad is nice, although it is very hot, as every-Central Europe. I finished a technical contribution to the Magazine and plans another in the same spirit (8).

With all my affection

well you

Freud

Dear Professor,

I am very glad that you supported this army difficult with so little fatigue, and you feel forced to work without interruption. Get rid of Jung meant for you to return to your original method of working : take everything in hand you and not to rely on "collaborators". The motto "After me the deluge * 1 "Seems to be the only valid science ; since the episode Jung, However, you often sinned against you and this maxim often sentimental with us. If you compare your state of mind at the beginning of the voyage to America (I remind you of your ailment in Bremen)2 than now, you understand the difference that I think. The essential fact remains that we get you the most possible and written, to this end, is the independence that you are most needed. This console me for the loss that, among other employees, could affect me too, result of this shift. Petty personal interests must be silenced when it comes to values as large. Certainly, I am indebted to a personal relationship with you and your interest in my progress, but what I've been, and am most grateful, it is still your works have graced my life and profession.

I just wrote to Jones and I told him I came to London in the first week of August. To accept his hospitality, I asked as a condition of continued analysis. I hope the day will analyze the reasons latent intentions3.

Before my departure for England, I would spend two or three days in the Tatras, where the family Palos, plus patches, Italian and Canadian 4, take his summer residence. – Today is the first time that I think of holiday travel with joy ; absence

Cher ami,

You certainly surprised all the time I have to Carlsbad, to write. But this is the first time I'm here without being disturbed, without Emden ; I spent the day very pleasantly with my wife, and I am still still quite fresh and ready for work. I'm actually writing a technical article (1), not unimportant in addition ; but today's letter is entirely devoted to the problems of writing.

First of all, rejoice to learn that you are allowed to scratch Maeder the header of the Zeitschrift. Other as soon, I hope 2 ! According to the report of Abraham, there is no doubt : we shall be rid of all. The letters circulating after you learn.

Furthermore, in the number of the Zeitschrift arrived today, I noticed some mistakes style for which I beg you to pull the ears of the guilty - Reik. He asked seriously criticize always with the utmost rigor. You can call me quietly you. I could write it myself, but I prefer to follow the hierarchy. It is a good boy, but it must not indulge in such vulgar B.

a) In the report on Reik Schmidt, p. 389 3, on lit (a base) : "Since such feelings when they appear almost normal to Mr. Advisor ? "We must refrain a tone as familiar, especially to our enemies, especially now that the controversy will become inevitable.

[Crossed] : p. 391, while low, un «Schnoferl» * not quite worthy. [Implied :] Here I am wrong.

Same as sheet 33.

b) J. H. Schultz4 : The ψα. Missed entirely in your, almost a denunciation. Why such nonsense does not find it in a journal of theological literature ?

c) Pfister who do you say that ** ? A rayer absolument, unknown-it is a Jewish gruité! Sec, ironic! Further, parenthesis "(This is certainly not the reason for adherence to theories of Jung ?) ». Une creeps-tion, where it should say more worthy : We hope that this is not the reason…

d) Diaper tape. Here, I only criticism is a lack of clarity. Is Wind.[elband] himself or someone else who pronounces the sentences quoted ? ("Expressed" is incomprehensible)5.

You see, I believe that writing is concerned aggressively rapporteurs, their good practices as well as their right mind.

Sincerely, your Freud

Cher ami,

I can not suppress a hooray. So here we are rid of them! We reproduce their indignation manifest in the next Korrespondenzblatt, where you can, I hope, You decide the case as President definitive.

You will find attached two letters : a statement and a letter from Putnam Maeder, that, like the one he sent you, also remain unanswered. The magazine will be very happy to not only repel Maeder, but Riklin, Seif and other. My bomb has therefore the effect. But it is advisable that your circular or reached its destination. We will have another good conference.

Come when you want. I need to track how I can organize the work. Additional, I do not really know if I'll want to work. I was much more difficult to deny you that I had proposed earlier to spend the whole summer together, at a time when I did not think still work during the holidays. The appointment is due to the delayed project to visit Lake Maggiore my wife, early September.

Do not be afraid to bother me again frequently in my cure. New like these are good.

Receive my cordial greetings and thanks.

Your Freud.

Cher Ami,

So, here we are again near the hot springs, enjoying the heat and rain as they come, and I can see how the effects on intestinal function always extend the relationship to money resulting (1). This time, I do not feel the break with the past as clearly as usual, I think back at work and I started studying Macbeth 2, bothering me for a long time, I could not find the solution to this. Strange, I dropped Macbeth Jones years ago, and now I take it back, sort of. There where dark powers involved. Annerl telegraphed, here, she had arrived safely at Southampton and it was expected by Ernest Jones. I took the opportunity to outline my position immediately in this case, because I'm not supposed to know anything and I do still not lose the dear child due to an act of revenge obvious, apart from everything, rationally, evidence to the contrary. I think Loe also ensure as a dragon 3.

In a letter the day before yesterday, Pfister 4 assures me that he has unexpectedly among us and is ready to enter the Viennese group if they Zurich conduct retirement planning5. So this is a first novel and it is good. The letter circulated and will happen very soon.

Otherwise, of course, nothing new. I'm about to tackle a few minor technical tests 6, pour la magazine.

With cordial greetings, your Freud

17 July 1914

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

I was really excited to learn the restoration of your sister, both in its interest for the freedom that makes you in your travel plans. I hope you will now have all the rest you need to Carlsbad, so that you are rested and again in September.

I went to the meeting with your daughter yesterday (1), imagining that she had to go through Hamburg, and I found it in good shape, very satisfied with the little trip. I have accompanied, she and her friend, because they had to travel a route through the countryside complicated, with several train changes, etc. She told me that you were grossly overworked lately ; I hope, next year, you will show more restraint in your hard work, because it must be very exhausting.

Bleuler's letter seemed, generally, very satisfactory, and very character-istic ; I addressed to Abraham. I look forward to the Interpretation of Dreams. I have not played since the release of the latest edition, This is for me a long interval, and I am delighted with the opportunity to refresh my memory on various issues as well as to study the additions(2).

Eder reacted badly to the "sharp spoon", deeming it "despicable, unworthy of you, missing generosity towards the valuable work done by Jung ", etc. – which is a typical example of emotional judgment. Its tendency is clearly a compromise on the matter, but he has sympathy for Jung on the religious and he is caught in a strange rebellion Semitic – a jumble of complex personal.

Rank tells me that Ferenczi's coming to London, but I have not had any news of it ; it's hard to take the pen and usually responds that second stimulus.

With all my best wishes

Affectionately to you

Jones.

Dear Professor,

It's a good thing that our letters do not be crossed once more. It is with great satisfaction that I consider the forthcoming withdrawal of the Swiss (1).

Bleuler's letter that Jones sent me today remember the last time passed Burghölzli, Jung distant association : This is undoubtedly a gateway can Bleuler us back. Have you paid attention to the last sentence?

I think that would Bleuler encouraged him to take the lead in Switzerland. We invite all the same Congress; we'll see what happens. Compensate its rallying in the face of all the world's wrongs we have cause schism.

For the case in hand Pfister, I notice quite opposite to yours, dear Professor!

I look forward to the latest revelations about the sexuality of the child!
