17-06-1914 Jones to Freud

17 June 1914

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

Your letter was eagerly awaited and much more welcome than usual. Your comments on the wedding Loe, etc., touched a chord in me sen-sible. You confirm the appreciation which I had expressed in Weimar and, at the time, you probably had seemed exaggerated. In spite of all this I can honestly say that I am delighted that we are parted and she has married another is the best illustration of the intolerable suffering it caused me, and you can guess that a relatively modest. Today, I almost fully paid her on the emotional and my attitude hardly goes beyond the fervent wish her to be happy.

For me too, The most remarkable feature of this chain of events is how our relationship has more than withstood the tension - this is even a question psychologically interesting - and I can not ascribing this, with deep gratitude, [your (1)] to feel truly English equity you have shown all along and your kindness to me even though you had presented a distorted picture of my shortcomings. All this has forged a permanent link in my feelings towards you.

Your remarks on Jung gave me a lot of good, and were obviously necessary. You rightly guessed that I was too much bad blood about it, and your letter reminded me more cold-blooded. The issue of my participation in the conference seems to me most important, and I will make my decision later, based on other considerations.

Thank you also for the translation of Everyday life (2), which imposes. Probably she will work well. Fisher Unwin asked me a book, so now I have here four publishers willing to take books ψα.

I was disappointed by a point in your letter - you guess which easily. I had hoped that the conference would take place earlier Leiden, in september, and you could spend some time in London before moving to Dresden. But I see that this is impossible and must wait for the pleasure of a visit next year – then we need to organize a regular meeting of friends (? Ferenczi et Rank).

Circular Letter of Abraham seems excellent, and in my opinion it should give some results.

I'm busy correcting the proofs of Yearbook. Tests your Narzis- smus they are already ready (3) ? I look forward to reading ; Sachs has touched me in a word.

This year, I will not take vacation, except in Dresden – with your permis-sion - Leiden, but I go to the countryside every Sunday, it gives me great pleasure. It's wonderful to be back in England !

Affectionately to you

Jones.

Cher ami,

After reading almost all of the new events Yearbook, I must express my thanks for the trouble you unparalleled are given in the interest of our cause. It will be an impressive demonstration of our little community, for which, in the coming time, the obituaries certainly will not miss.

Most of the reports are very good, some are excellent. I do not need to point out which. The homogeneity of viewpoints is particularly pleasant in all. Some may be, among the great, are too short; consistency is still lacking in the size of the subjects.

I ask you personally to make a little more carefully the passage relates to the question I posed in the analysis of Schreber, whether we should not change the concept of libido, it so that its terms do not appear to justify the misinterpretation of Jung. I asked only a dialectically, in order to, correctly interpreted as Ferenczi, give a negative response. All my objections merely that.

Now we naturally expect the effects of the "bomb", which has not yet been deposited. Deuticke promised to speed up. I can tell you, in my case, I feel again quite well. I often put the needs of the hour, I work 8 am to 9 pm.

Greetings and heartfelt thanks.

Your Freud.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share with you a few words. I gather somehow a node that I have to tell you. I ask you to let me know if you want to appear on the header of the journal23. Whether, it will be for the next issue. But think carefully ! We will soon have removed all names and their addresses Zurich there. It is for you to a position of sharper now if you include your name on the header. Because you are still in love with Jung, you can not really angry with him, you still see him as the hero pursued by the pack, you write me using phrases from his conception of libido, and you want to Abraham when he said his truths ! So you have to take a clear decision ; do not hesitate succeed more than good Pfister who suddenly finds himself between two stools24. Do you impose any constraint, but thoroughly to be what you decide.

Of course, I hope you manage to get rid of as bric-a-brac of the ideal childhood hero and knight Germanic hides all your opposition to your environment and your home; and I hope you do not expect this misleading image that originally the child you want your father certainly. Test your teaching are undoubtedly in the right direction. Your inner fire that warms your ambitions instead of consume you. Nothing is more powerful than passion controlled and derived. You can not take anything for the moment as you are torn on both sides.

Sincerely welcome you if you stay with us, but then you have to recognize that the enemy is in front.

With my sincere wishes,

Your Freud

Dear Professor

I think a lot to work on narcissism and, ci, there come to mind things that are associated. As you have not yet completed the correction (I believe that), I would draw your attention to a passage : the interpretation of certain terms could lead to misunderstanding, but changing a single word would not misunderstanding.

You talk about two kinds of "end of the world" [Doomsday], that of dementia and of being in love. But the world is lost in dementia, while, when in love, it is an end of me [Ichuntergang], which can lead to a catastrophe in its wake no less and have an equally psychologically revolutionizing the regression to narcissism in dementia.

This time, I will spare you other suckers this topic.

Madame G. cordially greet you,

Ferenczi your

When in love, the world is not going to ruin, but the object of love is to love the world.

"The highest stage of development that can reach the object libido, we see in the state of passion which appears as a divestiture of the person's own, the benefit of the investment object ; the opposite is in the fantasy (self-perception) end of world, in the paranoid " (Freud, 1914c), On Narcissism, pp. 83-84.

Cher ami,

Yesterday I read your work for Yearbook and I can not remember to congratulate you. I think this is the best contribution that clinic we've ever seen in 5 volumes : its insurance, its correction, wealth, interest do not have equal. Quent living!

Rank you have talked about immediate political interests that concern us now. You think the Swiss and Appendix leave Munich before Congress; I disagree with your insurance. In any case, it remains uncertain and our preparations for the congress are disrupted : in case they would be present, they will have to be different for otherwise, where we will have peace among us.

There would be a means : is ask (time) directly Maeder and Seif think if their groups to attend the conference, making it clear that this application is motivated by the need to identify the topic of discussion.

I think for me the theme : "Purpose and end a psychoanalytic association", in order to prove the existence of the Association, reject the objections relating to restrictions on scientific research, and give the Swiss, they are participants, a consilium abeundi. The theme could remain the same if we would not already immune to the troubles. I do not care no effects that occur on U.S. groups, that, anyway, can never be closely associated with us. I hope that London will remain with us.

I found it very elegant, and I defended the process against Rank, you do not, in your Korrespondenzblatt, more explicitly denounced the dirty work of Zurich. But Congress, you would not need to take gloves.

Sincerely.

Your faithful

Freud.

Dear Professor,

I read with delight Narcissism. For a long time I have not had as much fun reading. But I must also admit that, years, I can not really read anything other than your writing – and you can take this franchise as a sign of inner freedom, uninhibited, which begins to develop in me. Everything else, at bottom, 'm bored; you have spoiled us by giving us things to read too beautiful and strong, after which nothing else has taste. It is impossible to meet all the passages that I liked, I therefore renounce. More, I conform to your request, I note a few passages which we, firstly, together and discussed, other, are outlined in some of my published articles. Sure, not credit me if you feel that these things have emerged that because of me. Our work, it is true, must be designated as "collective"; each of us must give up a share of satisfaction of his ambition.

1) J’attire, for example, your attention to the paths of thought in "the work of introjection" (Yearbook I, 2), where the state of love is described as inclusion of objects in the field of interest libido, originally auto-erotic. This may well reflect the fumes of narcissism '. I described neurosis as an exaggeration of this process 2.

Page 430 - Paragraph 2 – I come from the separation between the self and the outer world of conflicts in the psychic life, originally, was homogeneous (by displacement limits [3]).

2) In "stages of developing a sense of reality", I think I have, the first, designated events infantile omnipotence (magic)4.

3) The reference to the idealization of the Criminal5 just me, I believe that.

On this occasion, I think I should draw your attention to the fact that it is perhaps not superfluous, about "emanations of the libido", expressly stated that you mean intrapsychic process, that is to say movement of the libido of the representation of the real perception of an object, otherwise we end up believing that you mean : a "radiation" on the object itself.

I can not help but pick up in the following formula your wonderful distinction between sublimation and idealization 6 :

That idealizes, sublime functionally.

That sublime, works perfectly.

Greetings from

02-06-1914 Freud to Jones

2 June 1914

Vienna, IX. Berggasse 19

Dear Jones,

I returned last night from Budapest, Rank and where I, accompanied by Ferenczi as an interpreter, have helped to become Mrs. Loe. Herbert Jones. I am sure that you must be painful, as it is for me, when I remember the sequence of events, since this evening, a cafe in Weimar, where you proposed to me to take treatment, to the moments where I assisted in his new marriage. It is a remarkable chain of changes between people and feelings, and salient points seem to me that our relationship was not spoiled and I even learned to love the other. For her, I fully appreciate what I learned from you the first time that you have described himself. She is charming, this is a gem as you call it in your letter of great nobility of spirit, and it is too extraordinarily abnormal for the happiness of a worker. It must be judged for it, with a standard that is adapted to its only me.

Although youthful appearance, Herbert J. is actually an accomplished man, and I hope they have as much happiness as his health permits it in the next time. The couple will spend a few days in Semmering, then return to Vienna to stay until my departure. I have no hope that it gets rid of morphine by then, but I think it is wiser not to ask her what she can not give, and I am anxious not to lose my credit with her. All things considered, it must disarm criticism and make a friend.

Turning now to the other points of your letter I had brought with me BPEST to answer on the ground, but I have not been able. I sincerely thank you for your corrections to my events, all certainly deserve consideration. I will add a few lines on Pf. where, I know, the most vulnerable link-able harness. I'm sorry that you follow the doings of Jung with much concern. It is inevitable that follow his path, accomplish its mission, produce impressions and eventually personify some resistance that ψα is expected to meet on its way. I'm not at all worried about what he produces, but I say that no one can predict what will. Even God or the Devil, perhaps, do not know much about it at the time it is. I do not need to follow the step by England to bring him on-the contradiction- champ, except perhaps on one occasion, you can choose your option. Let him speak and challenge him curtly and without writing thank you. I read these days a "Nachwort" to the second edition of "Inhalt der Psycho 1 », which appear unrelated series Fonts. He recognizes that his "constructive psychology" is not the science and, to finish, does not hide his membership Bergson. So you see he found another Jew for his father complex. I'm not jealous.

Our projects have now been arrested for. The 12 juillet à Carlsbad, that I need this time than in previous years, with my wife. 4 août à Seis (Tyrol), where we find my sister. 18 September, departure for Dresden, where I hope to meet my friends from the committee before Congress, 20/21 Congress, 24 September conference in Leiden (2) ; in those waters, I count (3) my daughter will come to England, not enough time to make the crossing, - And finally a few days in Hamburg with her (4). My failing health prompts me to not travel much (5).

Attached letter from Putnam, which is probably not the last word, as he is brave. Fighting for ψα, I must let you, young, because they are only just beginning and I do not see the end.

I will not tell Lina information on morphine, but I remain skeptical, I confess, and have no certainty on the matter.

Thank you for sending addresses to Fisher Unwin. If it is not customary to send books to people, I will not innovation.

I saw Sachs, he raved about London and you.

Please excuse this letter, Despite its length, can not be equivalent to yours, and think about your

25-05-1914 Jones to Freud

25 may 1914

69 Portland Court, London

Dear Professor Freud,

I am very happy to hear from Sachs that you're back in full form; I did not know that you were sick. I hope you'll have no trouble with these intestinal disorders, and that there will definitely end holiday. I will you know what your plans are, if you have already made. What is the date of the conference in Leiden, and you will he able to come to London after this ? I guess you go to Carlsbad in July?

I fully echo your desire to talk. My repeated visits to Vienna, during the last two years, I have "spoiled", and five months of absence seem long enough already ; I have to arrange for them to come twice a year. Anyway, I hope we will meet again before the time of Congress, especially now that it has been postponed.

Sachs's visit comes to an end. It was very satisfactory in all respects. He drew great satisfaction, and I equally. Live under the same roof is always a good test, and in this case it was successfully passed. I appreciate his excellent character more than before (time that I was perhaps a little influenced by aversion Loe its place), and we agreed to sea-eve. There is also good news to give its communication on our society Swift (1), everyone was greatly appreciated. He spoke 21/4 h. practically without any notes, and with complete success. There is one error that I can not heal - he insists to confuse genres (Starfish. Identification Interpretation of Dreams (2)!)

We enjoyed the third and last trials of "Geschichte (3)». I find it supremely good, nothing too high, and quite final - the final word on the matter. The passage on the "paar kulturelle Obertöne" is beautiful (4). I wish we could relieve you from the trouble of dealing with these oppositions, but no one else is in a position to say with authority the things you say once and for all, so it was impossible to relieve you of this work. But hopefully it will not appear again you need to leave the field of pure science in the positive sense. My desire is long form around you a circle of men who take care of the opposition while you continue the work itself, and the prospect of an ideal situation like this seems very promising.

As for suggestions on the latest events, they are all on the attached page. The first sentence "Wir haben… is gone (5)"Does not seem sufficiently clear in its context. The rest of the paragraph is a series of paraphrases Jung, and some readers may not understand that last sentence refers to your own point of view: (Perhaps we might add «Earlier» or "In Contrary » (6)).

Then in view of the misuse that can make presentations of patients (and what Jung can replicate), I suggest you add a word or two before the extract from the letter of Pf, to indicate that you have reason to believe that the author is a reliable person (7).

Finally, word "Blunt full» contradicts outwardly extracts from the letter, and does not make clear sense. I guess this means that the approximation of Jung with Dubois could be the last step - that of patients being treated with care (8)?

The changes you mention in the letter of today seems to be an improvement on the way we had commented, and I totally agree.

I write to Fisher Unwin, but send me a postcard, please, to tell me what you mean by people which should send the book. Is it homage to the author? A Angleterre, we do not send the books as examination in Austria.

Putnam tient nests, as you will see in the attached letter. I have not yet had time to read the test S. Hall, but I will report to the Magazine (9).

I received bad news from the activity of Jung. He announced a call for boarding. Congr. of Neurol. and Psych. de Berne, in september, the one 30 July before the British Medical Association, and the 24 July before the Psycho-Medical Society of London, the latest on the psychology of understanding ; in the latter two cases it will also involve me, This is not a pleasant prospect. These communications will take place just after the release of Yearbook, and they should let it show his reaction10. I [am11] bet he does not dra-vien Dresden, I hope we will have a little peace and the good work.

I'm not surprised, naturally, you have discovered that Loe can be challenging, largely because I can testify. I'm afraid she does not give up morphine, same for you and Herbert Jones. I know it by Lina deceived us all last summer on this point, although I do not know the details, because when Lina (to whom she had also hidden things) has pierced through, she made him promise not to reveal. Do not tell, please […12], although I am sure it is true. I was shocked to discover how Loe gave free rein to his insincerity and exaggerations in other directions (especially for me), even though I like to think it is mostly unconscious distortions.

I learn from your letter of today it will probably be married at the end of the week. In this case, nobody will for her future happiness as deeply heartfelt wishes that mine, and I pray that they come true. She remains in Vienna until July ?

With all my love

Affectionately to you

Jones.
